The Next Pretty Old House

The wait is over.  We’ve found the next Pretty Old House.

…make that Pretty Old Bungalow.

Pretty Old BRICK BUNGALOW with a FRONT PORCH with TAPERED COLUMNS, and BRACKETS.

This is what I’ve been looking for—and evidently so has everybody else. There were 50—yes you read that right– FIFTY– offers on this house.  But we were the lucky ones who went WAAAAYYYY over asking price and elbowed out all the other poor smucks.

Can you see the potential?

It has exposed rafter tails and brackets at the front gable.  And a big ‘ol hole in the front porch floor.  Nothing a little cement patch won’t fix—and maybe some slate tiles?  Remember this one?

Tapered columns—take a deep breath, don’t hyperventilate.

Just look at those brackets! (insert Maurice Chevalier growl here)

There’s a bead board ceiling on the porch… okay, I see the vines, but hey.

The front door is newer—can’t have everything—maybe it just needs a coat of paint.

What about this back yard?  Relatively flat, but drains off to the side, not overgrown, but shady.

The deck looks pretty good—needs a serious pressure wash and some sealer—and the hand rails are not even close to code—not to worry, we can fix that. The addition is another matter— that roof needs major work.

What can I say?  I think it’s great.

So…what do ya’ think?

Later,

I think it’s fantastic! So many of those old ones are getting torn down or remodeled into something unrecognizable as a bungalow! Those brackets and columns are amazing.

I looked at a similar house in my hometown last year. It had nearly 3 1/2 foot overhangs with the most incredible brackets. Sadly, hubby and I decided we couldn’t afford the enormous costs of bringing the house back to life as it should be. I went back a few months later to see that the new owners had replaced the roof and when they did, cut the roof back and those fantastic brackets were sawed off! It made me sick to my stomach.
My mom has housed her real estate office in a similar bungalow for nearly 20 years and recently closed her business. The new owner is preserving the home and having it moved to his farm. He appreciates the incredible details that cannot be replaced.

looks like a winner to me. can’t wait to see it and hear all about your plans for renovating. i’m sure it will be as fab as the rest of your projects have been!

  5. What I think is you have great vision. It’s interesting that 50 others saw the potential as well. Give me an old house any day, especially a brick bungalow on a lot like that. We can’t wait to see the interior. And what you will do to it.
